The Little Circle in Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver

Shiny, elegant, and versatile, sterling silver has been cherished and coveted by jewelry lovers for centuries. All of our lockets have a sterling silver option. Some favorites are The Little Circle (above), The Silver Bangle, The Silver Lillian, and The Silver Roxie Belle Heart. Pure silver is relatively soft which is why most jewelry is made with sterling silver composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper) to increase its durability and strength. All of our sterling silver is marked with a .925 to identify the standard. Over time sterling silver may tarnish due to airborne compounds, but you can clean your silver using the polishing cloth that comes with each locket or permanent piece of jewelry. With adequate care, your sterling silver piece of jewelry can be shiny and beautiful for years to come.

The Stacy in Gold Vermeil

14K Gold Vermeil

Vermeil strikes a beautiful balance between quality and value as it is considered the highest quality 14k gold alternative on the market. Most of our lockets are made of gold vermeil. Some of the most popular are The Gold Stacy (above), The Little Gold Oval, The Gold Disco Ball, and The Gold Dorothy. In order to be considered gold vermeil, the Federal Trade Commission requires the following:

  • The base of the metal must be of sterling (92.5%) or fine (99.9%) silver. This is why vermeil is also known by its other names: Silver Gilt or Gilded Silver.
  • The purity of the gold must be at least 10 karats. At The Locket Sisters we use a minimum of 14K gold in all of our vermeil options.
  • The thickness of the gold coat should consist of a minimum of 2.5 microns (0.0025 millimeters)

It is important to note that gold vermeil, gold plated, and gold filled are all different. You can see how each is characterized in the chart below. Gold vermeil is a beautiful yet affordable option for those who love the look of gold and also want the quality and durability. While the gold vermeil can tarnish, it comes clean with the polishing cloth included in every order. We also recommend using (cleaning solution) if the cloth isn’t wiping the tarnish away. We tell our customers, the more you wear your locket, the less tarnished it will become.

Exploring the Differences Between 14K Gold and Gold VermeilThe 14K Gold Edith

14K Gold

We introduced our “Solid Gold” line about 2 years ago after much inquiry from our customers. The Edith (above), The Dorothy, and The Ellen all come in 14k gold alongside their counterparts made of gold vermeil. 14K gold is one of the most common gold alloys used in jewelry. It offers a durable and relatively affordable option for those who want gold jewelry.

The purity of gold is measured in karats, with 24 karats being the maximum. 24 karat gold is too soft for use in most types of jewelry, and easily wears down or loses shape. It is also quite expensive, as it contains pure gold. 14K gold is created to offer a harder, stronger and more affordable metal with higher wearability.

To create 14K gold, 14 karats (equivalent to 58.3% of gold) is alloyed with 41.7% of other metals such as copper, silver, zinc and nickel. The type and proportion of the other metals can vary but the amount of gold must remain at 58% to be certified as 14K.

The Moon Locket Necklace

Gold Plated

Plating is the process through which a piece of jewelry made from a certain metal or alloy is covered with a layer of another metal. For example, a copper or silver ring with a layer of gold on top would be sold as gold plated.

Our open pendants including The Little LocketThe PennyThe Charm, etc. are made with silver and gold plated bezel pendants. These pendants are electroplated in the USA using imported precious metals; copper, 24k gold and .999 fine silver. By offering the pendants as plated, we are able to make these open lockets durable and affordable.

Make A Permanent Jewelry Appointment

Gold Filled

Gold filled chain is a type of jewelry chain that consists of a base metal, usually brass, covered with a thick layer of solid gold. The gold content in gold-filled chains is significantly higher than in traditional gold-plated jewelry, making it more durable and long-lasting.

Many of our permanent jewelry chains are either gold filled or gold vermeil. We offer these as a more affordable option alongside the 14k gold options that can be considerably more expensive. Gold-filled chains look beautiful, but because they are not solid gold, the base metal will start to show through after many months to a year.
